Religious vs. devout.

Many people dress up an exterior with the visible acts expressive of earnest devotion,

and the world supposes them to be really devout and spiritual-minded,

while all the time they are mere lay figures, may phantasms of devotion.

Charity leads us to do well, 

but devotion leads us to act carefully, diligently, and promptly.

Devotion is a spiritual activity and liveliness by means of which divine love works in us,

and causes us to work briskly and lovingly; and just as charity leads us to practice of

all God's commandments, so devotion leads us to practice them readily and diligently

Chicken and Eagle.

And for as much as devotion consists in a high degree of real love, it not only makes us ready, active, and 

diligent in following God's commandments, but it also excites us to be ready and

loving in performing as many good works as possible.

종교적인 것과 경건한 것은 다르다.

대부분의 사람들이 겉 모습을 종교적으로 보이게 함으로써 

사람들로 부터 신실하거나 착한 사람으로 보일려고 한다.

그것은 어디까지 허상일뿐 진실은 아니다.

겉으로 신실해 보인다고해서 진짜로 신실한 것은 아니니까.

같은 일을 하여도 어떤 사람은 그일을 함으로써 종교적으로 보이기 위해서 하는 사람이 있는가 하면

어떤 사람은 그 일 자체를 하는 것을 즐기고 기쁜 마음으로 하는 사람이 있다.

다시 말해, 섬김에 있어서 시간이 되어서 섬기는 사람이 있는가 하면

준비가 되어서 섬기는 사람이 있다는 말이다.

시간이 되어서 하는 것과 준비가 되어서 하는 것은 다르다.

시간이 되면 어쩔 수 없이 해야 하니까 내가 칭찬을 받거나 욕을 먹지 않으려고 하게 되는 경우가 많다.

즉, 내가 영광을 받기 위해서 한다는 것이다.

반대로 준비가 되어서 하는 것은 내가 기쁘고 하고 싶어서 하는 경우다.

내가 영광을 받는 것은 관심이 없고 그 일을 함으로써 

하나님이 영광 받으시길 기대하는 마음로 하는 것이다.

내가 한 일을 다른 사람이 알아주지 않아도 

내가 그 일을 해서 다른 사람들이 하나님께 영광을 돌리지 않아도

내가 한 일을 하나님이 알아주시기에 그것 자체만으로 신이 난다.

It is not about the action, but action with passion.

표면적으로는 둘 다 똑같은 일을 한다.

눈으로 보기에는 차이가 없다는 말이다.

하지만 행동안에 숨겨저 있는 것들을 보면 아주 큰 차이가 있다.

똑같은 일을 해도 경건한 사람이 있고 똑같은 일을 해도 종교적인 사람이 있다.

행동 자체는 똑같아도 그 사람의 마음에 따라 행동의 질이 결정된다.
